A Brief History of Louis Vuitton (and Resort)

Friday, June 11, 2010

I know that every LV-worshipping fashionista in the world will probably protest, but I have a love/hate relationship with Louis Vuitton. Not only are the designs bland, but they are outrageously expensive. Who really wants to pay upwards of $5000 for a dress that looks like this?

If you can make even the most beautiful and willowy of models look frumpy and dumpy, then there's something terribly wrong. The above example looks to be sewn out of grandma's kitchen curtains purchased at Walmart circa 1950 (if Walmart was around then, that is). And I know that Marc Jacobs is supposed to be promoting the cause of "real women" - whatever that means - but he could at least design clothing that would flatter them. Unless you're aiming to look like a Middle American housewife, you should avoid above collection at all costs.

See, Marc Jacobs, this is what I'm talking about. If you're going to induce people to spend their life savings, at least do something fabulously couture-y.

Flash forward to his most recent collection, resort. Initially, I breathed a sigh of relief:

Alas, Marc Jacobs left me underwhelmed. The other ensembles consisted of drab short suits in unflattering Easter Egg colors and floral-kerchief dresses combined with dubious-looking footwear.

At least it wasn't as bad as Fall 2010, but I expected something a little better from a designer known for his creative genius.
