Jason Wu Spring 2011

Saturday, September 11, 2010

Jason Wu's latest showing was a breath of fresh air in a season of "recession-friendly" (read: nondescript) collections. In stark contrast to the plain-Jane minimalism of his peers, Wu showcased frothy floral dresses, corsetted cocktail numbers, and the occasional satin turban. Though strikingly similar to Christian Dior's resort presentation in style and setting, it had a more youthful, modern vibe. Underneath the ladylike elegance of sheath dresses and structured totes, there was an undercurrent of sex appeal that prevented it from becoming too fussy. There were elements of tailored polish in wide-leg trousers and crisp suit jackets, but they were offset by the provocativeness of sheer bow-topped blouses and frilly lace bandeaus. His true talent, however, was manifested in his use of texture; tulle confections had ruffled skirts that simulated the petals of flowers, while the strategic frills on translucent bodices provided just a hint of demureness. While other designers played it safe, Wu reminded us that fashion, after all, is about having fun.
