Rag & Bone Spring 2011

Sunday, September 12, 2010

Rag & Bone belongs to that elite cult (whose members include Helmut Lang, Alexander Wang, and Proenza Schouler) that pioneers cutting-edge cool. David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have earned a place in that arena; they have a knack for sensing what cool girls want to wear, and executing that to perfection. Their unstructured, effortless designs have gained them a following of downtown hipsters (as well as uptown editors). Suffice to say, Rag & Bone is a favorite in a modern wardrobe. This season, they had plenty to offer in the form of oversized sheer oxfords, slouchy crochet minis, gartered bike shorts, and harness bras (scarily hip, albeit impractical) - often worn all at once. Effortless ensembles incorporated such disparate elements as Missoni-print sheaths, metallic trousers, and graphic bubble shorts. There was also an interesting reversal of order: sheer bralettes were worn atop collared shirts, dresses were layered over one another. Of course, there was the brand's signature sportiness - even a suit became preppy in white broderie anglaise. Overall, the effect was an interesting yet artistic hodgepodge that was unconventionally chic.
