J. Mendel Spring 2011

Gilles Mendel's spring presentation was an extension of June's prima-ballerina-themed resort presentation. But these clothes were no simple dancewear. Exquisite details such as dégradé fur, delicate hand-pleating, and plunging necklines made the collection more suited for offstage than on. Yet if the ensembles were more cocktail than theater, they exuded the signature grace and fluidity of ballet apparel. Topped with beribboned belts, swingy featherweight skirts in sheer chiffon mirrored the movement of the body. Graceful drapery and subtle ruching enhanced the elegance of flowing dresses in jersey, silk, and tulle. Even fur, the quintessential winter staple, was rendered summery with a neutral hue, feathered texture, and cropped silhouette. Though the mid-thigh numbers constituted the majority, their lengthier counterparts were equally stunning. Full-length skirts, despite their modest connotations, were anything but mumsy when executed in a diaphanous material that clung to the legs. In a more glamorous vein, a beautifully executed gown in champagne lamé was Mendel at his best. And to give credit where it is due, Christian Louboutin created the perfect footwear to complement the collection: his fiery orange pointe shoe packed a punch against the muted palette.
