Valentino Resort 2011

Under the reins of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Valentino has taken a younger and edgier - though no less elegant - direction. However, for resort, the design duo paid homage to the fashion house's founder with loads of lace, bow-topped kitten heels, and bursts of feminine ruffles.

A combination of leather and lace lent the collection a unique blend of toughness and romanticism. Chiuri and Piccioli made a foray into daywear with classic trenches and cropped moto jackets balanced by sleek, form-fitting flares. Yet the true emphasis was on evening: delicate flowers and silk-screened garden motifs invoked the freshness and gaiety of spring. In stark contrast, voluminous black ball gowns and asymmetrical lace minis explored darker, more daring territory. Perhaps due to the variance in themes, the collection was versatile, intriguing, and singularly beautiful.
