Gucci Resort 2011

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Frida Giannini's knack at combining old-school glamour with futuristic modernity has earned her rockstar status among the sartorial set. Her latest presentation was no exception. For resort, she turned out a jetsetting collection complete with sporty jumpsuits, buttery leather jackets, and snakeskin gladiator heels. Even casual daywear was rendered luxe with slouchy leather shorts, silk-screened scarves, and printed tees. The models' golden blowouts, tanned legs, and oversized sunglasses added to the upstreet quality. But even if the collection was decidedly posh, elements of relaxed sportiness and military cool gave it a laid-back vibe. Aside from easy separates, Giannini exhibited her expertise for formal wear with a shimmery, drop-waist champagne gown that had a vintage yet contemporary feel. Finally, she rounded out the presentation with two spectacular blush-hued dresses, both with plunging necklines and subtle side slits.

On an unrelated note, this season's SS 2010 campaign is one of the best I've seen yet - intriguing, innovative, and modern. The advert - photographed by Mert Atlas - features Gucci favorite Natasha Poly posing atop a glass couch in a variety of flexible positions. Set against the ocean backdrop, the sharp, oblique planes complement the futuristic quality of the clothes. In addition to creating visual interest, unique camera angles cleverly spotlight items such as a crocodile handbag, skintight jeans, and fierce black cutout boots.
