Alessandra Ambrosio looked every inch the terrestrial high-fashion mermaid in her seafoam Roberto Cavalli gown, beachy hair, and glittery extras. On anyone else, it might have looked slightly tacky and completely boring - picture almost any other celebrity wearing it (Uma Thurman, Reese Witherspoon, Isla Fisher) and it falls flat. Perhaps it was the seafoam green - a hard color to pull of with panache, but striking against the VS Angel's perennial golden glow (looks like someone's been making use of that Beach Sexy™ Daily Glow Gradual Tan Moisturizer!). The sultry, smoky eyes and tousled-yet-polished waves lent an exotic aura, as if she'd been lolling on some beach in the Bahamas (looking picture perfect, of course).
And just as we were thinking it might as well be Dolce & Gabbana & Madonna, the pop star was replaced by a bevy of supermodels after two seasons as the face of the Italian brand. Steven Klein captured dewy, tanned, and fresh-faced Izabel Goulart, Isabeli Fontana, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Maryna Linchuk against a simple stone backdrop. Whereas the Queen of Pop sported red lipstick, cat-eye sunglasses, and platinum tresses, Stefano and Domenico replaced retro glamour with a natural effortlessness (contributed to by the various stages of undress) that reflected the lightness of the clothes and jewelry. The result was charmingly effortless, a little nostalgic, and utterly Italian.
