Urban Jungle

For fall, Jill Stuart turned to Heidi Specker's photos of the Black Forest in Germany for inspiration. Silk-screened shifts boasted plenty of owls, full moons, and the occasional coyote, while rabbit furs sported what Stuart dubbed "Bambi" - a soft, golden taupe with deer-like flecks of white. The collection exuded a kind of sophisticated bohemianism with a dash of uptown polish, a unique blend that produced stunning results. An ensemble featuring a silk-print blouse, velvety burgundy trousers, and glossy platform loafers was both strikingly chic and elegantly unstudied. Bright socks added a dash of whimsy, while simple leather belts provided the perfect counterpoint to vivid hues. Colorblocking imbued drop-waisted dresses with the graphic utilitarianism so beloved by American sportswear; a beige, gold, and yellow number with a criss-cross design was particularly promising. Contrasting silhouettes produced slightly off-kilter yet surprisingly pulled-together ensembles; a neon orange maxi dress felt fresh with black boots and a short, swingy camel coat. With its modern refinement and quirky touches, Stuart's latest collection was by far her best to date.
