Versace Spring 2011

Donatella Versace exchanged sexy for sporty this spring. That's not to say, however, that Versace is one of the latest "American sportswear" converts. Rather, she traded in last season's bombshell for a sleeker, glossier version that was nonetheless glamorous.  PVC-coated topknots and defined brows had a futuristic severity that reflected the clean lines of attenuated sheaths and slit-up-the-middle pencil skirts. Colorful patent piping contrasted with a white so pure it was almost neon. Versace's signature logo - the Greek key - wrapped itself around embroidered waistbands, curlicued up the sides of A-line shifts, and emblazoned itself across the fronts of shirts. When layered one over another in varying sizes and colors, the pattern produced a kind of tribal motif that worked well with the modern eclecticism of the collection. The addition of layered fringe rendered Versace's trademark staples slightly off-kilter. When combined with the ethnic print, shorter tassels made an interesting mosaic of color and texture. Long, silky threads were woven tightly into the bodices of wasp-waisted gowns before cascading freely to the ground. Versace made even crop tops sophisticated when paired with high-waisted skirts that revealed subtle slashes of midriff. Like Etch-a-Sketch designs, pencil-thin clear insets ran diagonally across dresses and cut rectangular outlines in polished coats. Circular plastic buttons added a whimsical touch to everything from shoulder epaulets to eveningwear. They even appeared on curving, cutout shoes that resembled sculptural architecture more than high-fashion footwear. Even if Donatella toned down for the oncoming season, she still provided plenty of favorites for her loyal customers.
