Sachin + Babi Spring 2011

Friday, September 10, 2010

It's that time of year again when the appearance of the white tents in Bryant Park herald the start of a new sartorial season. Just three years after launching their eponymous line, design duo Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia made their debut in the big circuit with an appealing presentation of urban-friendly separates. A neutral palette of salmon, ivory, slate, and black complemented stiff drapery and unconventional (yet not overexaggerated) silhouttes. The Ahluwalias explored their bohemian callings with floral rompers, beribboned heels, and floaty paisley print dresses adorned with cascading ruffles. At the same time, glossy leather, black lace, and wraparound bondage boots were the epitome of downtown cool. Cutouts and kerchief hems figured prominently into the collection; the slits on a classic beige dress gave it a subtly sexy, modern edge. However, it was the closing numbers that stole the show: a nude sheath with sheer black overlay and a beautifully textured purple dress that captured the ease of fringe without sacrificing its elegance.
