Christian Dior Resort 2011

John Galliano at Dior knows how to create a fairytale out of fabric - couture-clad princesses swanned down the catwalk, floating amidst yards of tulle and delicate lace frills that could have come straight out of Cinderella's closet. But despite the demureness of puff-sleeved coats and jacket-and-skirt sets, the collection was hardly prim-and-proper. Saccharine ruffles and barely-there-pastels were tempered with a dose of slick black leather and vivid fuschia lips. Galliano offered a fresh take on the ladies-who-lunch with abbreviated hemlines, strappy heels, and sheer mesh insets. The models, who resembled Valentino Barbies, sported voluminous hair, tiny quilted purses, and chandelier earrings. Though it was a throwback to '60s glamour, the fifty-look collection felt anything but dated; it revived romance and youthfulness in a runway circuit ruled by austere minimalism.
