Parisian, But Not Terribly Chic
Friday, December 10, 2010
Tory Burch may have a signature - bright, urban, preppy - but she isn't afraid to explore new material. Burch stuck to her staples (oxford button-ups, patterned shorts, statement necklaces), but added a heavy dose of "Parisian chic," as the designer herself dubbed it. This translated to Breton-striped boatneck tees, jaunty A-line peacoats, and printed scarves tied to structured handbags. Layered coats, shirts, belts, and dresses had a haphazard appeal, but not all of the elements came together harmoniously. Scrunched midcalf camel socks beneath leather sandals might save a run to the salon for a pedicure, but they were at odds with the summery clothing. A fully-buttoned shirt was too prim when paired with a midcalf skirt, and sweatpants over tube socks were simply unfortunate. Many of the pieces, however, would work well as separates. If this wasn't Burch's most inspired collection, it's one that will do well on the retail floor.
