CFDA/Fashion Fund Awards

Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo were named runners-up, but it was menswear designer Billy Reid that took home the prize.

A brief bio and a look at each of their latest collections:

BILLY REID

The Alabama-based designer got his big break in the 3rd Annual GQ "Best New Menswear Designers in America" project, showcasing his talents in their March 2010 issue. The Lousiana native fuses modern fashion with casual New Orleans style, creating wearable ensembles that are edgy (faded snakeskin-print shorts, shrunken vests) without being overdone. And now that he's taken the creme de la creme of sartorial awards, the world has taken notice.

PRABAL GURUNG

In his latest collection, the Nepalese designer combined the elegance of Oscar de la Renta with the simplicity of Max Azria and the cool factor of Phillip Lim. Quite a feat for a collection of 41 looks. Add to that Demi Moore, Thandie Newton, and Michelle Obama on his client list, and you've got a recipe for success. Gurung's second nomination for the award proves that he's still going strong.

 EDDIE BORGO

If the name sounds familiar, it's because it probably is. His designs have been spotted on the arms (and necks, and fingers) of Kristen Stewart, Vanessa Traina, and Lauren Santo Domingo, among others. His cool-kid, punky creations have earned him raving reviews in Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, but don't mistake him for just another Tom Binns. Though their work shares the same element of rebelliousness, Borgo focuses more on the futuristic, innovative, and cutting edge than all-out deconstructed glamour; his Swarovski-studded designs toe the line between rocker and refined. Quirky touches like jaws engraved on a silver tooth to resemble the underside of a shark distinguish him from his pretty (but pretty conventional) contemporaries. On top of celeb sitings, he's worked with Marchesa, Philip Lim, and Jen Kao, not to mention runway collaborations with Prada and Lanvin. It's his second CFDA nomination (he won previously for Accessory Designer of the Year), and if his extensive resumé proves anything, he's more than eligible.
