4. Fruit and Butterflies

With this season's emphasis on the natural and aversion to the over-stylized (minus Marc Jacobs), several designers turned to outside inspiration, literally. The buttons at Behnaz Sarafpour were made with cherry pits. Stella McCartney's grapefruits were a fresh alternative to clichéd florals, while Wolfgang Joop's oversized berry print for Wunderkind meshed with his quirky aesthetic. Prada went bananas, with button-down shirts and flared skirts featuring the sunny produce. Even Vogue Nippon fashion director Anna Della Russo cited fruits as "the big trend of the next season." But if fashion is all about change, nothing spells metamorphosis quite like the butterfly. The invitation to the Antonio Marras show was a box of butterflies, and models walked through a cloud of them - cut from paper - at the finale. Loewe's catwalkers rocked winged insects on their nails. Claes Iversen opened with fluttery confetti and featured braids intertwined with oversized arthropods. One of Alexander McQueen's ensembles was composed entirely of orange monarchs, down to the accents on the heels. And Lanvin's collection had enough insects (in the form of buggy brooches) to unsettle the slightest entomophobe. Perhaps the program at Carlos Miele summed it up best: "Few creatures embody the state of being carefree as perfectly as the ever-flitting butterfly."
