Prabal Gurung Spring 2011
Wednesday, September 15, 2010
Though a relative newcomer to the runway circuit, Prabal Gurung has already snagged a CFDA nomination, gained a steady celeb following, and dressed none other than Michelle Obama. You could say that's quite an accomplishment for a designer that made his debut just a year and a half ago. Gurung made a promising opening with a slick, stretchy dress in an electric blue geometric print. However, the striking, futuristic effect was soon lost upon a baggy sweater and mid-length skirt. Despite this minor setback, the collection quickly regained its momentum with second-skin cocktail dresses and tailored coats in nude, black, and white. Graphic scuba sheaths gave way to more subdued (but still formfitting) eveningwear. Restrained ruffles, translucent layers, and feathery fringe softened minimalism with a touch of romanticism. Gurung finished on a vibrant note with delicately sculptural silk dresses in coral, lemon, and turquoise. The simple cuts, sleek tailoring, and subtle embellishment let the saturated color take the spotlight. Even better were the full length gowns - a vivid blue number with sheer insets invoked the flowing beauty of sunlit water. Though his latest presentation wasn't groundbreaking in its originality, at least it ended on an optimistic note.
